Canas Defeats Bastl in Indian Open Tennis Championship - 2002-01-01


Top seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina has reached the second round of the Indian Open tennis championship in Madras.

Canas scored a straight-set win over George Bastl of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-2. However, two seeded players - fifth-seeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus and eighth-seeded Kristian Pless of Denmark - were beaten. Mirnyi lost in straight sets to Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand (6-3, 6-3). Israel's Noam Okun beat Pless in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).

In other first round action, Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic scored a straight-set win over Mahesh Bhupathi of India (6-2, 6-2). Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat Byron Black of Zimbabwe in straight sets (7-6, 6-3).

Fourth-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic rallied from a first-set loss to reach the second round of the Qatar Open men's tennis tournament in Doha.

Novak scored a three-set win over Markus Hipfl of Austria, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Also advancing to the second round was seventh-seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany, a straight-set winner over Jarkko Nieminen of Finland (6-3, 6-2).

Albert Montanes of Spain defeated countryman David Sanchez in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia defeated Austrian Stephan Koubek in three sets, (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
