Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova has advanced to the quarterfinals of the ASB Bank Classic hardcourt tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
Kournikova beat seventh-seeded American Amy Frazier, the last seed in the top half of the draw, in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. She will next take on Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland. The 20-year-old Russian has not won a tournament on the WTA tour, and spent most of 2001 sidelined with a foot injury.
Meanwhile, Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus ousted second seeded Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. Poutchek takes on Croatia's Silvija Talaja in the quarterfinals. The Croatian scored a three-set win over Slovakia's Maja Matevzic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Third seed Anne Kremer of Luxembourg scored a straight-set win over Barbara Schwartz of Austria 6-2, 6-3. She next takes on fifth seeded Tatiana Panova of Russia, a straight-set winner over American Jennifer Hopkins 6-4, 6-2.
