Among the U.S. Marines killed Wednesday in the crash of a U.S. military plane in Pakistan was a female radio operator, Sergeant Jeannette L. Winters. She became the first American servicewoman to die in the fighting in Afghanistan.
With women serving, and dying, in the U.S. military, the issue of women and combat has been raised once again in America. It's a debate that has stretched back over several decades but may erupt again.
