Zambia Red Cross/Zimbabwe - 2002-02-22

The Zambia Red Cross Society says it’s preparing for a possible influx of asylum seekers from neighboring Zimbabwe.

The Red Cross says it’s concerned about an increase in violence in Zimbabwe as the March presidential election approaches.

The Red Cross intends to concentrate its efforts on three entry points along the border with southern Zimbabwe.

The actions come amid almost daily television reports in Zambia of violent demonstrations and confrontations in Zimbabwe, in the run-up to the election.

These images have created uncertainty in Zambia about the situation. However, Zimbabwean officials have pledged there will be a free and fair election.
