Togo Releases Opposition Leader - 2002-03-15

Togo's government has released an opposition leader after holding him nearly eight months in jail.

Yawovi Agboyibo, leader of the opposition party, Action Committee for Revival, left prison late Thursday. He had been held since August 3 on charges of defaming the prime minister.

Mr. Agboyibo's release is seen as an attempt by the government to end a political deadlock that led to postponement of parliamentary elections earlier this month.
