Soccer: Liverpool, Barcelona Win Champions Cup Quarterfinals - 2002-03-20

The football (soccer) clubs from Liverpool of England and Barcelona of Spain have filled two more berths in the quarterfinal round of the Champions Cup.

Liverpool defeated Roma, 2-0, Tuesday. Roma was eliminated from a close race in group "B" after Barcelona picked up a 1-0 win in Turkey against Galatasaray. Barcelona won group "B" with eight points with Liverpool and Roma each with seven. But Liverpool advanced because of a better head-to-head record against the Italians.

In group "A," Manchester United of England and defending champion Bayern Munich of Germany already have qualified for the final eight. Manchester United beat Portugal's Boavista, 3-0, while Bayern Munich defeated Nantes of France, 2-1.

Eight-time European champions Real Madrid and fellow Spanish side Deportivo have already reached the quarterfinals and the final two spots will be decided on Wednesday.

Panathinaikos of Greece or the Portuguese club Porto will claim one of the remaining spots in group "C." Arsenal of England or Bayer Leverkusen of Germany will advance in group "D."

The quarterfinal draw will be held Friday. The results mean Italy, the one-time power of European soccer, has again failed to make the quarterfinals of the continent's top club competition.
