Jordan's King Will Not Attend Beirut Summit - 2002-03-27

Jordan's King Abdullah is among the Arab leaders not attending the Arab League summit meeting in Beirut.

Jordan did not immediately announce why King Abdullah decided not to attend the Arab meeting in the Lebanese capital.

But, it is believed his decision is linked to a move by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that effectively blocked Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat from attending the summit.

Jordan's foreign minister, Marwan Muasher, said in Beirut that the king's decision was not due to political reasons. But he declined to elaborate.

A Lebanese presidential spokesman said no reason was given for the Jordanian king's last-minute decision.

Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb is leading Jordan's delegation at the summit.
