Gary Thomas is a veteran newsman who joined VOA in 1986.
He has covered war and unrest in such disparate spots as Bosnia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and East Timor.
Gary began his journalistic career in 1973 with United Press International in Washington, and subsequently worked at States News Service and the Griffin-Larrabee News Service (where he was also co-owner), both in Washington, and in Austin, Texas at the Austin American-Statesman.
He has covered Congress, the White House, the Defense Department, and U.S. regulatory agencies. In 1990, he began a four year tour as VOA's Islamabad correspondent. From there, he moved to Bangkok where until 2001 he worked as VOA's Southeast Asia correspondent.
A Vietnam veteran, Gary is an amateur chef and fine wine aficionado. He is also an amateur folk musician who plays guitar and mandolin.
