Sri Lanka's cricket team has beaten Pakistan by nine runs to win its second match at the Sharjah limited-overs tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
Sri Lanka batted first and scored 239 for six, with Marvan Atapattu scoring 77 runs and Upul Chandana making 64 runs off 88 balls.
Pakistan appeared ready to overtake the Sri Lankans and needed only 19 runs off the last 18 balls, but Sri Lankan bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa held. They limited Pakistan's sixth-wickert pair to only nine runs in the last three overs, closing out Pakistan at 230 for five.
Pakistan has four points from its lone victory and must beat New Zealand in its next match in order to make the final. Sri Lanka leads the standings with eight points from two wins. They also need to beat New Zealand to guarantee themselves a berth in the finals.
