Five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones of the United States opened her season with a victory in the 400-meter event Sunday at the Mount San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, California.
Jones breezed to the win in 50.46 seconds, more than a full second ahead of second-place finisher Ladonna Antoine (51.65). Latasha Richardson captured third place (51.72).
After the race, Jones said she felt very strong and had been going for a personal best, so she was a little disappointed in her time. Although she is more comfortable running the 100- and 200-meter events, Jones said she plans to run the 400-meters several times this year to build her strength. However, she does not intend to compete at that distance in any major championships.
Jones, along with Olympic gold medalists Angelo Taylor, Alvin Harrison, Jearl Miles Clark, Antonio Pettigrew, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Monique Hennagan are among the top American athletes that will compete for Team USA April 27, at the USA vs. The World competiton at the Penn Relays. Nearly 150 athletes from eight countries will compete at the event.
