In early May, 2002 New York hosted the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children, a gathering of heads of state and children from over 180 countries intended to assess the needs of children and arrive at a consensus for a plan to aid children over the next 13 years. In addition, children from 12 countries earned the chance to express their views and concerns to the U.N. leaders.
