Rebels Attack Northern Uganda Refugee Camp - 2002-08-05

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says about four hundred rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army overran a refugee camp Monday in Northern Uganda.

The Acholi Pii camp in the Pader District, is home to about twenty four thousand Sudanese refugees.

UNHCR spokeswoman Bushra Malik says there are casualties, but it is not known how many. She says that's because rebels stole or destroyed communications equipment while they looted the camp.

Ms. Malik says there was a small attack on the camp last week, but government soldiers repulsed it. She says more information will be available once UNHCR staff and government soldiers reach the camp. Ms. Malik spoke to English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua.
