Former Australian and French Open tennis champion Jennifer Capriati of the United States has easily advanced to the third round of the JP Morgan Chase Open hard court tournament in Los Angeles.

Capriati scored a straight-set win over Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland in her second round match Tuesday, 6-1, 6-2. She will take on Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in the third round. The Thai player defeated American Amy Frazier in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, third seeded Lindsay Davenport had a tough night match but managed to beat Russian Elena Bovina in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Davenport is still coming back after undergoing knee surgery earlier this year.

The event is over for fifth seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium - she lost in three sets to Slovenia's Katerina Srebotnik, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Srebotnik next faces Italian Rita Grande.

Later Wednesday on the courts at Manhattan Beach, top seed and Wimbledon champion Serena Williams takes on Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia. Fourth seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia faces Tina Pisnik of Slovenia. Anna Smashnova of Israel takes on Amanda Coetzer of South Africa.

In men's tennis, top seed and world number one Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and Americans Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi take the courts Wednesday at the Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hewitt faces Italian Davide Sanguinetti while Sampras takes on Australian Wayne Arthurs. American Andy Roddick has a match against Nicolas Kiefer of Germany and Andre Agassi faces Guillermo Coria of Argentina.

Britain's Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman are also on the hard courts. Rusedski, who ousted Russian Marat Safin in the first round, takes on Spain's Tommy Robredo. Henman, who ousted three-time French Open winner Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil, plays Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.
