Niger has asked neighboring Nigeria to extradite scores of mutinous soldiers who have escaped across the border in recent days. Niger officials made the request after government troops put down a series of mutinies by soldiers demanding better pay and working conditions.
Meanwhile, a coalition of political parties backing the government has requested setting up a special military court to try captured mutineers. The uprisings began about a week ago, when rebellious soldiers took control of the southeastern town of Diffa, which is now in government hands.
On Monday, the government stopped rebellious soldiers, who stormed the capital, Niamey.
