Pope Condemns Attacks on Christian Institutions in Pakistan - 2002-08-10

Pope John Paul II has strongly condemned this week's deadly attacks on Christian institutions in Pakistan, calling them "heinous crimes."

In a telegram Saturday to the papal representative in Pakistan, the head of the Catholic Church expressed his "profound grief" over the attacks.

He called on the international community to build a world of peace and tolerance where, he said, such acts of violence will neither be condoned nor forgiven.

This week's attacks, which left nine people dead, targeted a Presbyterian hospital and an interdenominational Protestant school.
