Hewitt, the top men's seed, is scheduled to take on Israel's Noam Okun in a second round match. Williams faces Alicia Molik of Australia in women's play.
In action involving seeded players, No. 4 Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia takes on Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty and former champion and sixth-seeded Andre Agassi of the United States faces countryman Justin Gimelstob. Eight-seeded Albert Costa of Spain takes on South Africa's Wayne Ferreira and ninth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain plays American Jan-Michael Gambill.
