New York City police have arrested a man who fired shots into the air at United Nations headquarters.
The man identified by police as Steve Kim jumped the fence surrounding the headquarters complex and fired seven shots into the air outside the main building.
Immediately afterward, Mr. Kim threw copies of a handwritten message into the air that protests human rights conditions in North Korea.
Mr. Kim then dropped his gun, and waited calmly to be arrested. Seconds later, U.N. security officers captured the shooter and turned him over to local police.
No injuries were reported, however, at least two bullets hit the United Nations headquarters.
The incident occurred while the U.N. Security Council was meeting to discuss the possible return of weapons inspectors to Iraq.
It is not clear how the man eluded security at the U.N. headquarters complex. It has been under heightened security since the attacks of last September 11.
