In African athletics, Kenyan star Catherine Ndereba says she will run the 2003 London Marathon.
Ndereba's entry in the British capital could result in another duel with local favorite Paula Radcliffe of England. Catherine held the world record in the women's marathon until Radcliffe broke it in Chicago in October. Radcliffe clocked two hours, 17 minutes, 18 seconds. Ndereba finished second, crossing the line in two hours, 19 minutes, 26 seconds.
Catherine Ndereba is perhaps the greatest female marathoner ever from Kenya, a country that has dominated the classic 42-kilometer distance. She has won the Boston Marathon two times, as well as the Chicago Marathon. Appropriately, she is nicknamed "Catherine the Great."
