Castro Holds Talks with Chinese Officials - 2003-02-27

Cuban leader Fidel Castro is holding a second day of talks with Chinese officials Thursday as he continues his his four-day official visit to China.

Mr. Castro is scheduled to meet with Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongi, Vice president Hu Jintao and legislative leader Li Peng.

Following his arrival in Beijing Wednesday, Mr. Castro met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

As two of the world's last remaining Communist states, Cuba and China have developed strong ties over the past 10 years. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, China has become Cuba's most important trading partner.

Mr. Castro is scheduled to wind up his Asian tour this weekend with a visit to Japan. Before arriving in China, he had been in Malaysia to attend the summit of the 116-nation Non-Aligned Movement. He began his visit to the region last Friday in Vietnam.
