Third-seed Marcelo Rios of Chile has advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP International men's tennis championship in Delray Beach, Florida.
Rios beat Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands Wednesday 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Rios will face Lee Hyung-taik in the quarterfinals. The South Korean ousted Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil 6-2, 6-3 in Wednesday's second-round contest.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals was American Mardy Fish, who beat Fernando Meligni of Brazil 6-2, 7-6, and Spain's Alberto Martin, who upended Georgia's Irakli Labadze 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, the men are also playing tennis in Scottsdale, Arizona where Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina has toppled the fifth seed at the ATP Templeton Classic.
Zabaleta needed three sets Wednesday to oust German Rainer Schuettler from the second round, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Spaniard David Sanchez beat Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador, 6-3, 7-6. Taylor Dent defeated fellow American Cecil Mamiit, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, while James Blake of the United States needed three sets to beat Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
Top seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia had a day off after reaching the second round late Tuesday with a win over Spaniard Fernando Vicente. The world number one ranked Hewitt appears in the quarterfinals Thursday against South African veteran Wayne Ferreira.
