Spain's Mayo Wins 8th Stage of Tour de France; Lance Armstrong Takes Yellow Jersey - 2003-07-13

Spanish cyclist Iban Mayo of Spain captured Sunday's 219-kilometer eighth stage of the Tour de France. But four-time defending champion Lance Armstrong of the United States finished the grueling mountain climb in third place, good enough to claim the overall leader's yellow jersey.

Mayo outdueled a group of riders including Armstrong and second place finisher Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan as they made the punishing climb toward the finish line of the legendary L'Alpe d'Huez mountain stage.

Mayo finished the stage in five hours, 57 minutes and 30 seconds, one minute and 45 seconds ahead of Vinokourov and two minutes and 12 seconds faster than Armstrong. Armstrong has a 40 second lead over Spanish rider Joseba Beloki, who is second overall. Mayo is third in the overall standings, one minute and 10 seconds back, while Vinokourov is fourth, 1:17 behind Armstrong.

Monday's ninth stage from Bourg d'Oisans to Gap is a 184.5-kilometer ride featuring the last of three Alpine climbs, including the mammoth Col d'Izoard - a 2,360-meter mountain grind.
