Serena Williams Will Not Defend US Open Title - 2003-08-02

World-number-one women's tennis player Serena Williams will miss her chance at defending the U.S. Open title this month after undergoing knee surgery.

Williams is expected to miss six to eight weeks after an operation Friday to repair a partial tear of the quadriceps tendon in her left knee.

Williams has won six of her last seven grand slam events, including last year's U.S. Open, when she beat older sister Venus.
