Golf: Shaun Micheel Wins PGA Championship - 2003-08-17

American golfer Shaun Micheel has captured his first PGA golf victory in the final major tournament of the year, the 85th PGA Championship.

The 34-year-old Micheel shot an even-par 70 in the final round Sunday to finish at 3-under-par 276 on the tough Oak Hill Country Club course in Rochester, New York. Fellow American Chad Campbell placed second, one shot behind. The only other golfer to finish under par was American Tim Clark, two shots off the lead.

Other first-time winners in major tournaments this year were Canadian Mike Weir at the Masters, U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk of the United States, and American Ben Curtis at the British Open. The last time all four major titles were held by first-time winners was in 1986 and 1987.

World number one golfer Tiger Woods was never in contention at the PGA Championship, finishing in 39th place at 12-over-par 292. Woods did not capture a major title this season for the first time since 1998. He is now winless in six straight major events.
