International football star David Beckham has gotten off to a less than sensational start in front of Spanish fans as he made his home country debut for Real Madrid.
Spanish newspapers described Beckham's performance for Real against Valencia on Sunday as "mediocre," "a dud" and "as gray as his jersey." Becham himself admitted that he could have had a better start, smiling as he said "it can't get any worse." Just two weeks before the Spanish League season begins, the star midfielder was substituted in the 63rd minute after making little impact. Beckham was playing his fifth match for defending champion Real, since arriving from Manchester United in June with a price tag of more than $39 million. Madrid won the friendly pre-season game on penalty kicks, 6-5, after they two sides played to a scoreless draw.
