World number one men's tennis player Andre Agassi and rising star countryman Andy Roddick could meet one another in the finals of this year's U.S. Open in New York.
The draw for the tournament was held Wednesday and Agassi and Roddick are in opposite sides of the draw. Agassi will start the tournament against Alex Corretja of Spain. Roddick will face England's Tim Henman in the first round.
Roddick has won 30 of 32 matches so far this year including winning tournaments at Queen's Club and Indianapolis. However, Henman beat Roddick in the semifinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic earlier this year in Washington.
In the women's draw, Belgium's Kim Clijsters is the top seed because American Serena Williams is out with an injury. Clijsters and second seed Justine Henin-Hardenne, the French Open winner, will open against qualifiers.
Third seeded Lindsay Davenport of the United States meets Belgium's Els Callens, while fourth seeded Venus Williams takes on an qualifier. The two-week U.S. Open gets underway Monday at the U.S. Tennis Center in New York.
Second seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France has reached the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen Classic hard-court tennis tournament in New Haven, Connecticut.
Mauresmo scored a straight-set win over Switzerland's Myriam Casanova, 7-5, 6-4. The French player next faces Japan's Ai Sugiyama. The eighth-seeded Sugiyama beat Tatiana Perebiynis of Ukraine (6-4, 7-6).
Two other seeded players were eliminated from the event. Fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia lost to Zimbabwe's Cara Black (6-3, 6-2). Maugi Serna of Spain reached the quarterfinals with a straight-set victory over sixth-seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria (7-6, 6-3).
The tournament is a key warm-up for the U.S. Open, which gets underway next week at the U.S. tennis Center in New York.
