Russia Reports Surrender of Chechen Separatist Allegedly Preparing Terror Attack - 2003-09-01

Russian officials say a Chechen separatist preparing for a terrorist act at a school in Grozny has surrendered to authorities instead.

A spokesman for federal anti-terror forces in the region told reporters the man turned himself in on Monday. The man said he was to fire a grenade on a crowd of people at ceremonies marking the beginning of the school year.

Police found the grenade in the area the separatist indicated and the spokesman, Colonel Ilya Shabalkin, said that type of weapon is used to hit armored targets and could have killed or injured hundreds of people.
