MLB: Cubs Edge Marlins in National League Championship Series - 2003-10-11

The Chicago Cubs have defeated the host Florida Marlins, 5-4 in 11 innings, to grab a two-games-to-one lead for major-league baseball's National League championship.

Doug Glanville drove in Kenny Lofton with the winning run after midnight in Miami, with a triple in the top of the 11th.

The see-saw battle saw Florida score twice in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead, only to watch the Cubs regain the advantage in the eighth on a two-run homer by Randall Simon. Florida tied it at four apiece in the bottom of the eighth, setting up the second 11-inning game between the two teams this week.

The opening game of the best-of-seven series, on Tuesday, was another marathon, with the Marlins eventually beating the Cubs in Chicago.

The Cubs and Marlins play Game 4 Saturday in Miami.

The American League championship resumes this afternoon in Boston, with Red Sox pitching ace Pedro Martinez facing New York Yankees star Roger Clemens, who began his long major-league career in Boston.

The winners of the two league championships will meet in baseball's World Series beginning on October 18.
