First-time marathoner runner Evans Rutto of Kenya and reigning Boston Marathon champion Svetlana Zakharova of Russia captured the men's and women's titles at the Chicago marathon on Sunday.
Rutto completed the almost 42-kilometer course in two hours, five minutes, 50 seconds, just eight seconds off the Chicago record. Kenyans swept the top five men's spots with Paul Koech second, one minute and 17 seconds back, while Daniel Njenga was third (2:07:41).
Zakharova won the women's title in two hours, 23 minutes and seven seconds, 28 seconds faster than Romania's Constantina Tomescu-Dita. Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia was third (2:24:53). The 33-year-old Zakharova finished ninth at the August World Championships in Paris, where she ran a time of 2:26:53.
The 26th running of the Chicago marathon featured around 40,000 runners chasing a record purse of $550,000.
