5 Philippine Lawmakers Walk Out On Bush - 2003-10-18

Five leftist legislators walked out of a joint session of the Philippines Congress Saturday to protest against President Bush during his speech to the legislative body.

Mr. Bush gave no sign he had noticed the walkout, expressing thanks to the congressional leaders for a warm welcome.

The five lawmakers were all from fringe leftist parties and included Satur Ocampo, a former communist guerrilla leader.

House of Representatives member J. Virgilio Bautista tried to hoist an anti-war banner as he left his seat, but marshals seized it from him.

A small number of Philippine legislators who opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq also wore pins that read "Legislators Against war," but unlike the five, they stayed to listen to Mr. Bush's speech.
