Men's Volleyball:  Serbia and Montenegro Defeats US at World Cup - 2003-11-17

The United States men's volleyball team has suffered its first defeat at the World Cup in Japan. The Americans fell to reigning Olympic champions Serbia and Montenegro in straight sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-22).

Ivan Miljkovic led the winners with 19 points at Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo. Clayton Stanley was the U.S. team's top scorer with 19 points. The Americans are now 1-1 at this 12-nation event. The top three teams qualify for next year's Athens Olympics.

In other action Monday, Brazil, Italy and host Japan all ran their records to 2-0. Reigning world champion Brazil got by France in four sets at Nagano Arena (24-26, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22). Italy dominated Venezuela (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) and Japan needed four sets to get past winless China (23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20).

South Korea won its first match, beating Tunisia, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 28-26). Canada also evened its record at 1-1 with a straight sets victory over Egypt (25-22, 25-16, 25-20).
