Sudenese Refugees Flee To Eastern Chad To Escape Fighting - 2003-12-10

There’s a new exodus of Sudanese refugees into eastern Chad. In all, 75,000 Sudanese have crossed the border into eastern Chad in the last seven months.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says about 10-thousand people have crossed the border in recent weeks. Millicent Mutuli is a spokeswoman for the UNHCR. She tells English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua that the refugees are fleeing the Darfar area of Sudan, the scene of aerial bombings and “alleged ethnic cleansing.”

She says the UNHCR wants to move the refugees away from the border, but it must first sink wells and build basic road networks at new locations.
