Israeli soldiers have shot dead a Palestinian who was attempting to bomb a Jewish settlement Thursday in the Gaza Strip. The incident follows days of heavy fighting in the area between Israeli soldiers and armed Palestinian militants.
Palestinian officials say a member of the militant group Islamic Jihad had planned to set off explosives inside the Israeli settlement of Ganei Tal in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli troops patrolling the area spotted the man crawling toward the community's security fence and opened fire. The army says soldiers later found the man's body with a bomb about 100 meters from the gates of the settlement.
The incident follows a week of bloody violence in the Gaza Strip. At least nine Palestinians were killed during exchanges of gunfire between militants and Israeli troops conducting security operations.
Meanwhile, in the West Bank Wednesday night, a member of Hamas, another group that has carried out frequent terror attacks, was killed in an explosion. Israeli officials say he died when the car bomb he was preparing exploded prematurely.
