Haiti's President Accepts Peace Deal - 2004-02-21

Haiti's President Jean-Bertrand Aristide says he has agreed to an internationally-backed plan to form a new government with his political opponents.

But rebel leaders say they will reject any deal with Mr. Aristide that does not force him to leave office.

A U.S.-led team of foreign diplomats has been meeting with both sides in the capital, Port-au-Prince, in an effort to press for an end to two weeks of violence.

At least 55 people have died in clashes between armed gangs supporting Mr. Aristide and those who oppose him.
