Seavey Wins Iditarod - 2004-03-17

It took him 12 attempts, but Mitch Seavey is finally a winner in the prestigious Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in the U.S. state of Alaska.

The 43-year-old crossed the finish line in Nome late Tuesday, 11 days after the race began in downtown Anchorage. For the win, Seavey receives $69,000 and a new truck.

Seavey's father, Dan Seavey, helped plan the first Iditarod in 1973.

The 1,800 kilometer race commemorates a 1925 relay to deliver serum to prevent a diphtheria outbreak.
