Scottish Golfer Montgomerie Wins Caltex Masters Tournament - 2004-03-21

Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie fired seven birdies to win the Caltex Masters tournament in Singapore by three strokes, and claim an invitation to The Players Championship.

Montgomerie started play Sunday four shots off the lead, but responded with some of his best golf, to card a final round 65 and end the tournament with a 16-under par total of 272. The Scotsman's play steadily improved throughout the tournament after he shot 71, 69 and 67 in the first three rounds.

In a tight tournament, co-third round leader Greg Hanrahan of the United States held on for second place, with a 13-under par 275 total after a final round 72. Australia's Nick O'Hern and India's Jyoti Randhawa tied for third at 276.

The tournament was jointly sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours. It was Montgomerie's 28th title on the European Tour and his 37th worldwide as a professional.
