Australia Sweeps 3 Test Cricket Series in Sri Lanka - 2004-03-28

Shane Warne took four wickets but missed a world record Sunday in Colombo, as Australia became the first touring cricket team to sweep a three-test cricket series in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankans lost six wickets in the last 34 overs Sunday, and were all-out for 248 as they chased 370 to win. Australia won the tumultuous finale by 121 runs with eight balls to spare, but Warne missed retired West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh's record of 519 wickets in tests by just two. He captured six wickets in the match for a career total of 517.

Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, Warne's chief rival in the race for the record, had his bowling action reported to the International Cricket Council after taking 28 wickets in the series. He will be allowed to continue playing for the next six weeks while his action is assessed, giving him the chance to break Walsh's record during next month's tour of Zimbabwe. He currently has 513 wickets from 88 test matches.
