President Megawati's Party Holds Slight Lead in Early Indonesian Election Results - 2004-04-07

Vote counting continues from Monday's Indonesian parliamentary elections, with results so far showing President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party holding a slight lead over the main opposition.

Indonesia's General Election Commission said Wednesday, Ms. Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle had 20.5 percent of the votes already counted, while the opposition Golkar Party had about 20 percent.

Election officials said at least 12 percent of the votes had been tallied. Final results are not expected for several days.

Pre-election polls indicated that Golkar was likely to win enough votes to become the leading party in the 550-seat parliament, but without an absolute majority.

Analysts say a solid showing for Golkar would hurt President Megawati's chances in the July fifth presidential election. Her party is expected to win fewer seats in parliament than it now holds, even if it does get more than Golkar.
