Washington Post Publishes New Iraq Prison Photos - 2004-05-06

A U.S. newspaper has published a new set of photographs of the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

Among the pictures published in Thursday's Washington Post is an image of a U.S. soldier holding a leash tied round the neck of a naked man at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison.

The Post reports it obtained the photographs as part of a collection of more than 1,000 digital images circulating at the prison, some of which are similar to those shown in the U.S. media last week.

The White House said Thursday President Bush has seen the new images, calling them "appalling."

The new photographs emerge amid reports President Bush has privately admonished Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over his handling of the prisoner abuse scandal.

Mr. Rumsfeld will testify about the abuse reports Friday at an open hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Following the hearing, he will meet privately with members of the Senate.

White House aides, speaking on the condition of anonymity, say President Bush was particularly unhappy that Mr. Rumsfeld failed to inform him about the photographs showing the abuse, which have provoked international outrage - especially in the Arab world.
