Montgomery Named New Warriors Coach - 2004-05-22

The National Basketball Association's Golden State Warriors have named Stanford University's Mike Montgomery as their new head coach, replacing Eric Musselman, who was fired after two seasons.

The Warriors introduced Montgomery at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Montgomery is one of the most successful college coaches in 18 seasons at Stanford. He led the Cardinal to its third number one seed in the NCAA tournament this year. However, Stanford lost in the second round to Alabama.

Stanford has been to the second round of the annual college tournament for 10 straight years and made the national semifinals in 1998. Stanford won its first 26 games this season and finished the regular season ranked number one in the country.

Musselman led the Warriors to 38 wins in his first season and 37 victories this past season. However, Golden State has not been to the playoffs since 1994.
