Iran: No Immediate Plans to Resume Uranium Enrichment - 2004-06-19

Iran's top national security official has backed off threats to resume uranium enrichment after the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a resolution Friday "deploring" Tehran's failure to fully cooperate with international inspections.

Hassan Rowhani told Iran's state news agency, IRNA, that Tehran does "not want to carry out enrichment for the time being," but it is reconsidering suspension of other activities.

The news agency says Iran will apparently resume production of centrifuge components, which it voluntarily stopped producing in April as a confidence-building measure with the international community.

Several Western countries have accused Iran of secretly trying to develop atomic weapons and of failing to comply with IAEA rules. Iran says its ambitions are limited to producing electricity.
