Gadhafi's Daughter to Defend Saddam - 2004-07-03

The daughter of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has joined the legal team hired to defend ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein against war crimes charges.

Members of the multi-national team led by Jordanian Mohammed al-Rashdan confirmed that Aisha Moammar Gadhafi requested to be part of the team and was retained this week.

The team of 20 lawyers was hired by Saddam's wife Sajida and his three daughters after his capture by U.S. forces last December. It has thus far failed to gain the Iraqi Bar Association's permission to enter Iraq.

Thursday, Saddam appeared without counsel before a special Iraqi tribunal at a U.S. military base in Iraq. The former leader refused to sign a document listing the charges against him.

Mr. al-Rashdan Friday questioned the court's authority.
