Pentagon Investigating New Cases of Prisoner Abuse - 2004-07-15

A key lawmaker says new allegations of prisoner abuse by U.S. military personnel are being investigated by the Defense Department.

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republican Senator John Warner, revealed the latest cases after his panel met in closed session to review the status of investigations into the prisoner abuse scandal.

"We are still uncovering, as late as this morning, other incidents, other cases, that will be promptly investigated by the Department of Defense, allegations relating to variances to the Geneva Convention, and indeed the rules and regulations of the Department of Defense as regards detainees," he said.

Photographs of U.S. soldiers mistreating Iraqi detainees at a prison outside Baghdad shocked the world when they surfaced earlier this year.

Mr. Warner did not say where or when the latest cases of alleged abuse occurred.
