The Bush administration is dismissing a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Israel's West Bank barrier. The resolution supports a ruling by the International Court of Justice, which declares the construction of that barrier illegal and says it should be dismantled.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan says the non-binding U.N. resolution is one-sided and fails to recognize the need to solve the dispute politically.
"We don't believe that the U.N. resolution is the appropriate way to go," he said. "The appropriate solution is to follow the road map to get to the political solution that has been outlined."
Mr. McClellan says the so-called "road map" peace plan is the best way forward because it envisions separate Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace and security.
He says President Bush has always defended Israel's right to protect itself but as it does, he says Israeli leaders should keep in mind the plight of the Palestinian people and work in a way that does not place undue hardships on their freedom of movement.
Israel has vowed to continue building the barrier that weaves through parts of the West Bank.
