Eritrea Denies It's Supporting Sudanese Rebels - 2004-08-03

Sudan says Eritrea is backing rebels in western and eastern Sudan. The governor of Kassala State in eastern Sudan says Eritrea was behind an agreement signed in Asmara in late July that brought together two rebel groups in Sudan ? the Free Lion?s Movement (of Eastern Sudan) and the Sudan Justice and Equality Movement (of Western Sudan).

The Eritrean ambassador to the United States, Girma Asmerom, denies that his government is supporting any Sudanese rebel groups. He accuses Khartoum of genocide against its own people and says Asmara supports efforts by the international community to pressure Sudan to end attacks by the Janjaweed militia against the citizens of Darfur.

English to Africa reporter William Eagle spoke with Ambassador Girma. Click above links to download or listen to interview.
