Jiang to Give Up Last Post, Hand Power to Hu - 2004-09-18


Jiang Zemin, head of China's military and former president, may step down on Sunday, handing full power to his successor, Hu Jintao.

Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reported Saturday, that the 78-year-old military chief handed in his resignation at a plenum of China's Communist Party's Central Committee on Thursday.

Reuters news agency cited a source with close ties to Mr. Jiang's family as saying the former Chinese leader's health is very poor and "he wants to go."

The news agency quoted another source with ties to the party leadership as saying Mr. Jiang has had a heart problem since around 1989.

Mr. Jiang resigned as party secretary-general in November of 2002. Mr. Hu took over the presidency in March of last year.
