Peruvian TV News Staff Quits Over Toledo Allegations - 2004-10-06

The staff of a Peruvian television news program has resigned after President Alejandro Toledo questioned a video the show said confirmed allegations the president committed political fraud.

Submitted late Tuesday, the resignations by the staff of the program, Fourth Estate, followed the airing two days earlier of a taped dinner celebration in which the president appeared to be praising campaign workers for adding signatures to a petition.

Mr. Toledo, who has been accused of falsifying the petition that qualified his party to file for the 2000 elections, telephoned the station after the video aired and called the show's anchor a "coward."

The Associated Press reports the president told the broadcaster he was referring to a check of signature lists against voter rolls, and the transcription of those signatures onto a computer disk.
