Wimbledon tennis champion Maria Sharapova of Russia has reached the semifinals of the Japan Open tennis tournament by scoring a straight set win over Youlia Fedossova of France (6-3, 6-4).
The top seed and defending champion Sharapova next faces Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, who advanced when her opponent Aniko Kapros of Hungary retired in the second set.
The other women's semifinal has American Mashona Washington taking on Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic. Washington defeated Evgenia Linetskaya of Russia (6-2, 6-1). Koukalova scored a straight-set win over countrywoman Nicole Vaidisova (6-3, 6-0).
In men's play, top seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia reached the quarterfinals with a three-set win over Takao Suzuki of Japan (6-7, 6-2, 6-4). Second seed David Nalbandian of Argentina lost in three sets to Gilles Muller of Luxembourg (7-6, 3-6, 6-4).
Seventh-seeded Taylor Dent of the United States beat Lee Hyung-Taik of South Korea (7-6, 5-7, 6-3). Ninth-seeded Cyril Saulnier of France ousted eighth seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden (6-7, 7-6, 7-6).
