Braves Outlast Astros to Even Major League Baseball Playoff Series - 2004-10-08

The Atlanta Braves have beaten the Houston Astros in dramatic fashion in the Major League Baseball Playoffs to even up their National League Divisional series.

The visiting Astros got early solo home runs from Jeff Bagwell and Raul Chavez to go up 2-0, but the Atlanta Braves battled back with runs in the 7th and 8th to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th, when Rafael Furcal hit a two-run, walk-off homer to give the Braves a 4-2 win in extra innings. The best-of-five series is now tied at one win each.

In the other National League playoff game Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-3. Mike Matheny drove in four runs for St. Louis, which broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The American League Divisional Series resume Friday with the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins tied at one game each, while the Boston Red Sox lead the Anaheim Angels 2-0.
