Australia Tops India in Cricket - 2004-10-10

Australia has defeated India by 217 runs in Bangalore in the opening match of a cricket four-match test series. The Australian team got its first test win on Indian soil in 35 years Sunday, as they bowled out the home side for 239 in its second innings. Australia had scored 474 and 228 in their two innings. India crashed out for 246 in its first innings, but Australia decided against enforcing a follow on in order to avoid batting last on a crumbling pitch. India was set a never-before achieved, second-innings victory target of 457. No team in test cricket's 128-year history has ever scored more than 418 runs in its second innings to win a match. Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said his players need to lift their game to come back in the series.
