MLB: Yankees Lead AL Championship Series - 2004-10-13

In the Major League Baseball playoffs, the New York Yankees have taken the first game of the American League Championship series, hanging on the beat the Boston Red Sox 10-7 Tuesday night.

The host Yankees built a huge 8-0 lead by the sixth inning while pitcher Mike Mussina was tossing a perfect game. That ended with one out in the seventh when Boston's bats came alive and pushed five runs across the plate.

The Red Sox scored two more times in the eighth inning to pull within a run of the Yankees, but New York scored two runs in the bottom of the inning for the final 10-7 outcome.

The two teams meet again Tuesday in New York, while the St. Louis Cardinals host the Houston Astros in game one of their best-of-seven National League Championship series.

The winners advance to the World Series to be played later this month.
